Reading the source of a page

Every web page is made of text your browser reads. You can read it too.

  1. On a computer: press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac), or right-click and choose View page source.
  2. On a phone: type view-source: before the address in the browser bar, for example view-source:https://code.dre.me.uk/.
  3. Look for blocks that start with <!--. Those are comments written for humans, and some pages here hide ASCII art and notes in them.
  4. Open the browser console (F12) on the Shards site: it prints a hint about hidden things.

Director's cut: what you see in "view source" is what the server sent. The "Elements" panel in developer tools shows the page after scripts have changed it, so the two can differ.
